Letter from the Vice Chairman:

Dear OWASP Community,

Over the past number of months the Board of Directors has been working on the feedback received from the community. This feedback aligned with our key strategic goals for the year. One of our key goals was to further strengthen the "P" in OWASP. To this end we have been working with the Open Security Summit to put more of a focus on improving project development and growth and hope to enable projects through events such as this.

Another goal is to strengthen our student outreach. One idea I had was to work with colleges all over the world to support our projects development as part of their internships. I wonder if there would be anyone in the community to assist in this effort by creating a Committee under the revised Committee 2.0 model - https://www.owasp.org/index.php/Governance/OWASP_Committees. To simplify things I have added a quick start guide at the beginning of the document.

Diversity is something that we hold dear to our hearts. There are a number of people in our community that have driven this initiative to enable OWASP to be a more diverse community, without naming any names, we would like to thank them and encourage more of those in and outside of the OWASP community to get involved and help OWASP grow.

Last but not least, planning for our global conferences is well under way with OWASP Global AppSec Tel Aviv coming up at the end of May – one small ask is that everyone share information on this conference in your communities,https://telaviv.appsecglobal.org.

OWASP FOUNDATION UPDATE FROM INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR:

For these first few months I have been focused on business operations retooling. As you know, Mailman was recently retired. There is now an online static archive of historical messages. Our goal before Q3 is to have most of our tools on managed, trusted hosted services.

We have increased our use of JIRA to manage inbound requests and last month the team closed 98.6% of service tickets within their prescribed SLA. In January it was 20.4%. This is a very big accomplishment and demonstrates our progress on this work effort. There have also been a number of back office changes that most members won't notice, but we're focused on stronger business continuity for the long term.

In addition to all our upcoming events, the staff along with some members of the community are actively prototyping how we will completely update the website this summer. This effort will not be simply cosmetic, it will be a foundational change in how we manage and publish content that we believe will better connect with our community - and more importantly help us grow. Expect more updates on this in the coming months.

Reversing C++ String And QString

After the rust string overview of its internal substructures, let's see if c++ QString storage is more light, but first we'r going to take a look to the c++ standard string object:



At first sight we can see the allocation and deallocation created by the clang++ compiler, and the DAT_00400d34 is the string.

If we use same algorithm than the rust code but in c++:



We have a different decompilation layout. Note that the Ghidra scans very fast the c++ binaries, and with rust binaries gets crazy for a while.
Locating main is also very simple in a c++ compiled binary, indeed is more  low-level than rust.


The byte array is initialized with a simply move instruction:

And basic_string generates the string, in the case of rust this was carazy endless set of calls, detected by ghidra as a runtime, but nevertheless the basic_string is an external imported function not included on the binary.

The string is on the stack, and it's very curious to see what happens if there are two followed strings like these:

  auto s = string(cstr);
  string s2 = "test";

Clang puts toguether both stack strings:
[ptr1][sz1][string1][null][string2][null][ptr2][sz2]

C++ QString datatype

Let's see the great and featured QString object defined on qstring.cpp and qstring.h

Some QString methods use the QCharRef class whose definition is below:

Searching for the properties on the QString class I've realized that one improvement that  rust and golang does is the separation from properties and methods, so in the large QString class the methods are  hidden among the hundreds of methods, but basically the storage is a QStringData *;

After removing the methods of QStringData class definition we have this:

Hello, in this article you are going to learn how to secure yourself from getting hacked using evil twin attack.

1) Do not connect to any public networks, anyone can sniff your data while you are on a public network.Evil Twin attack will be performed as a public network, so wherever possible restrict connecting to any open or public networks mainly if it wifi name is same as your wifi name

2) When your internet connection suddenly stops working, you might be under DOS attack using evil twin attack, just restart the router and the hacker need to restart the attack and as it takes some time.  Maybe they leave it or continue some other time 

3) Running a VPN to ensure that any browsing and transmitted data is done through an encrypted tunnel that cannot be easily snooped. 

4) Do not always rely on the name of the network, make sure it is a legitimate and trusted network or not.

CertCrunchy - Just A Silly Recon Tool That Uses Data From SSL Certificates To Find Potential Host Names


It just a silly python script that either retrieves SSL Certificate based data from online sources, currently https://crt.sh/, https://certdb.com/, https://sslmate.com/certspotter/, and https://censys.io or given an IP range it will attempt to extract host information from SSL Certificates. If you want to use Censys.io you need to register for an API key.

How to install
git clone https://github.com/joda32/CertCrunchy.git
cd CertCrunchy
sudo pip3 install -r requirements.txt

How to use it?
Very simply -d to get hostnames for a specific domain
-D to get hostnames for a list of domains (just stuff it in a line-delimited text file)
-I to retrieve and parse certificates from hosts in a netblock / IP range (e.g. 192.168.0.0/24)
-T the thread count makes stuff faster, but don't over do it
-o Output file name
-f Output format CSV or JSON, CSV is the default
for the rest, I'm still working on those :)

goGetBucket - A Penetration Testing Tool To Enumerate And Analyse Amazon S3 Buckets Owned By A Domain


When performing a recon on a domain - understanding assets they own is very important. AWS S3 bucket permissions have been confused time and time again, and have allowed for the exposure of sensitive material.

What this tool does, is enumerate S3 bucket names using common patterns I have identified during my time bug hunting and pentesting. Permutations are supported on a root domain name using a custom wordlist. I highly recommend the one packaged within AltDNS.

The following information about every bucket found to exist will be returned:
  • List Permission
  • Write Permission
  • Region the Bucket exists in
  • If the bucket has all access disabled

Installation
go get -u github.com/glen-mac/goGetBucket

Usage
goGetBucket -m ~/tools/altdns/words.txt -d <domain> -o <output> -i <wordlist>
Usage of ./goGetBucket:
-d string
Supplied domain name (used with mutation flag)
-f string
Path to a testfile (default "/tmp/test.file")
-i string
Path to input wordlist to enumerate
-k string
Keyword list (used with mutation flag)
-m string
Path to mutation wordlist (requires domain flag)
-o string
Path to output file to store log
-t int
Number of concurrent threads (default 100)
Throughout my use of the tool, I have produced the best results when I feed in a list (-i) of subdomains for a root domain I am interested in. E.G:
www.domain.com
mail.domain.com
dev.domain.com
The test file (-f) is a file that the script will attempt to store in the bucket to test write permissions. So maybe store your contact information and a warning message if this is performed during a bounty?
The keyword list (-k) is concatenated with the root domain name (-d) and the domain without the TLD to permutate using the supplied permuation wordlist (-m).
Be sure not to increase the threads too high (-t) - as the AWS has API rate limiting that will kick in and start giving an undesired return code.
